***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***

The Nervous Breakdown and Hukilau partner to launch TNB's new publishing imprint.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (June 2010) - Readers addicted to nonfiction, fiction and poetry have long been getting their fix at the online culture magazine The Nervous Breakdown (TNB), a site founded by bestselling author Brad Listi (Attention. Deficit. Disorder.). Now, in partnership with Hukilau, TNB will be launching its own publishing imprint, producing print, e-book, transmedia, and audio books for lit fans worldwide. Its e-book offerings will be targeted for the iPad, Kindle, and other major e-publishing platforms.

"We feel like this is a natural next step," said Listi. "TNB is an outgrowth of book culture, and we're excited to be publishing on our own imprint. We're also excited about the possibilities offered by new technologies."

"We're proud to be partnered with TNB on this groundbreaking venture," said Hukilau founder Joseph Matheny. "Providing the technological framework for distribution and creation fits into our company's philosophy of providing development, production and distribution for independent media."

Founded in 2006, TNB has quickly become one of the web's most beloved publications devoted to literature and the arts, as well as a vibrant community of writers and readers. Fittingly, its first publication will be a collection of nonfiction by D.R. Haney, one of the site's most popular contributors. Haney, author of the underground classic Banned for Life, a novel about punk rock, will be publishing a collection titled Subversia on the TNB imprint. The book will feature Haney's original work from the site, along with three new pieces, never before published. The e-book edition, available on all major e-reader platforms, will include a documentary film about Haney directed by Los Angeles filmmaker and award-winning music photographer Timothy Murray.

Going forward, TNB plans to publish at least one title per month. All editions---print, e-book, audio---will be made available on the site itself, at the new TNB Bookstore. Print editions will also be available at all major online retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound. E-book editions will be available at all major e-book retailers, including Amazon, the iBookstore, and BN.com. And audio books will be available via iTunes and Audible.com.

Hukilau will be building and providing the production and distribution framework, utilizing the Asemblook tools developed by founder Joseph Matheny. It will also be working with TNB to develop proprietary production and distribution tools for ePub, iPad, Kindle and PDF-rich media eBooks.

The Nervous Breakdown is headquartered in Los Angeles. It currently features the work of more than 250 authors and poets from around the world, including Chuck Palahniuk, Antonya Nelson, Jonathan Evison, Nick Flynn, Steve Almond, Danielle Trussoni, Stephen Elliott, Alexander Chee, Ben Loory, Jessica Anya Blau, Greg Olear, Ron Currie, Jr., Shya Scanlon, Stefan Kiesbye, Gina Frangello, Stacy Bierlein, Joanna Smith Rakoff, and Tao Lin.

Wait. Am I the first one here…on the brink of history-making?

If I am, let me be the first to say, You Are Made of Awesome. And, THANK YOU.

I know, I know. But I did have to work on the manuscript, and still do. I’ve been on a serious time diet.

I owe you a comment about the El Cortez. One will appear at some stage. I know the place well.

Thanks, Megan.

Also, I should probably here take the opportunity to thank Brad, Joe, and Greg Olear, who’s been a big help with the preparation of the manuscript.

I’ll conclude with a statement of general thanks to TNB before the orchestra drowns me out and I’m nudged from the podium by last year’s winner.

Comment by Simon Smithson

Another component to Subversia will be an interview with Duke, conducted by Yours Truly. If anyone has a burning question they’d like to ask Mr. Haney, please drop me a line and let me know.

And Brad: woo-hoo!

I love it. I consider Joseph Matheny a good friend and a great businessman. I sit on Hukilau’s Advisory Board and I see a perfect fit between the two entities.

Congrats to Duke, TNB, Joe, Hukilau, Brad, and all future recipients who will be a part of a great new imprint.

Love it!

we’ll throw our nets
out into the sea
and all the ama ama
come a swimming to me

oh we’re going
to a hukilau

. . . ad nausem

In case nobody knows, hukilau is a kind of net fishing.

Hukilau, Akamai . . . what’s next? Lolo!

Great news, Brad. Jump on that iPad shit!

And do I get a prize for predicting that the big announcement was going to be about print?
